Athletes like Marcellus don't come around often

Not only is Marcellus Jackson the male Student-Athlete of the Year at Fulton High for 2022-23, he's arguably talented enough to hold that title in Tennessee.

The 5-8, 150-pound senior stood out in four sports for the Falcons.

As an elusive and exciting quarterback, he was the state's Mr. Football in Class 4A and signed with Tennessee Tech, where he will likely play as a slot receiver.

One of his top awards in basketball was making the All-Tournament team after helping Fulton capture the Class 3A state title with his leadership and gritty play as an all-round guard.

This spring he qualified for the long jump in the Class AA state meet with a PR (personal record) of 21 feet and 7½ inches in the sectionals.

Prior to going to the Spring Fling, Jackson played some baseball for the Falcons, starting at shortstop and batting .579. Early in the season, longtime coach Buzz McNish, who was in his first season at Fulton after coaching years at Lenoir City and Knoxville West, made a surprising comment about Jackson that further added to his reputation as an athlete.

"Marcellus could be a better baseball player than he is a football or basketball player," said McNish. "He has raw talent" in baseball.

Jackson is scheduled to report to TTU in Cookeville Friday (June 16).

One of the first memories Fulton fans have of Marcellus is seeing him lead the football team onto Bob Black Field by doing back-flips.

The flipping never stopped. He got in a few more when the Falcons were presented the gold basketball at Murphy Center in March.

The legend of "MarMar" will be missed, but not soon forgotten.

Winton was a vocal leader and slugger

Senior Envy Winton is Fulton's female honoree and was a standout on the softball field for the Lady Falcons.

"She was a leader both vocally and by her play," said Fulton Athletic Director Jody Wright.

Winton was a two-time All-District 5-3A player as she hit .422 with three home runs.

"She played in the outfield and catcher and was a huge part of Fulton's success on the softball field the past two seasons," added Wright.

Envy plans to go to the University of Tennessee and major in Nursing.
