City Offers Hands-Only CPR and Stop the Bleed Workshops

February is American Heart Month, and the City is offering opportunities for residents to support community safety efforts and be prepared for emergencies.

The Office of Community Safety (OCS), Knoxville Fire Department (KFD), and the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment (ONE) are hosting two, community-wide Hands-Only CPR and Stop the Bleed trainings, taught by certified KFD trainers and free for Knoxville neighbors. The first hour will be the Hands-Only CPR, and the Stop the Bleed will be the second hour.

Workshops will be held at Larry Cox Senior Center, 3109 Ocoee Trail on:

* Monday, Feb. 20, 6-8 p.m.

* Saturday, Feb. 25, 9-11 a.m.

Please be aware: These are not certification classes. If you need certification for a job, please reach out to other groups, like the American Heart Association, to get certified in CPR and First Aid.

In addition to more community-wide Hands-Only CPR and the Stop the Bleed workshops, which will be announced at a later date, your neighborhood, community group, or church group may request that KFD hold this training workshop at one of your monthly meetings or a special event. We already have requests from several neighborhoods for this opportunity. This training can help save lives!

Some facts about heart health:

* Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States.

* One person dies every 34 seconds in the U.S. from cardiovascular disease.

* About 697,000 people in the U.S. died from heart disease in 2020—that's 1 in every 5 deaths.

* Heart disease cost the U.S. about $229 billion each year from 2017 to 2018. This includes the cost of health care services, medicines, and lost productivity due to death.
