Re: Understanding Romans 5:12-19 (key: what is "the free gift")

So then when you said the sinner needs to make atonement for himself, you didn't mean he needs to "to cover over, pacify, make propitiation, to expiate or condone, to placate or cancel -- appease, make (an atonement, cleanse, disannul, forgive, be merciful, pacify, pardon, purge (away), put off, (make) reconcile(-liation) his own sins.

Haven't I just said "Now, the Hebrew word "Kaphar" was translated "atonement" whenever sin is concerned. So, with that alone, the other senses such as "cleanse, forgive, pardon, purge away, put off," are not the ones intended, but the sense of making atonement is what is intended."

As I have shown you:

atonement[ uh-tohn-muh nt ]
: satisfaction or reparation for a wrong or injury; amends.

atonement
Kids Definition of atonement
: a making up for an offense or injury

So, what I meant is, the repentant sinner, to be reconciled to God and be no longer enemies to God, needs to make atonement (to make up) for his sins, to the satisfaction of God. But being unclean, he can only do so through a mediator between him and the Holy God. The sinner can atone for his sins through the mediation of the priests of God ~ through the Levite priests under the OT, and through Jesus Christ under NT.

And this statement you made.
Quote from: GB
"That is why there are priests whom God ordained to be a mediator between the sinner and Him. And that even, with the priest having to first make atonement for himself."
